About vendor

Koss was founded in 1953 as a hospital TV rental company by John Koss. When looking for new ideas to kickstart the company, John teamed up with engineer Martin Lange. Almost by accident the two of them came upon the headphone idea as a result of an attempt to market a portable phonograph. What made this product unique was the privacy switch feature, which gave listeners the opportunity to listen to the first Koss SP/3 Stereophones.

Until then headphones had only been used in communications applications. In 1958 the design was introduced at a hi-fi trade show in Milwaukee, and it became an instant success. Soon after the trade show, Koss went into business manufacturing and marketing stereophones.

In the following years Koss developed a number of iconic models that are still being sold to this day and loved by millions. Such are the company’s most legendary series Porta Pro, first introduced in 1984. Other notable examples include Pro/4AA launched in 1970, as well as the 1990-s inventions: KSC35, UR 20 and The Plug.

Koss technologies were copied by the competition. In 2020, Koss sued Apple, Bose, JLAB Audio, Plantronics Inc., and Skullcandy for patent infringement, eventually settling with Apple in 2022 for an undisclosed amount.

Since 1989, all headphones manufactured in North America by Koss come with a limited lifetime warranty covering normal use by the initial owner.

The Koss family still owns more than 75% of the firm.
